Cruise FAQ

What documents do I take with me?

How do I pay for items on-board?
Most cruise liners will request a major credit card at check-in to keep an account open for the duration of your cruise. All incidentals on-board will be billed to your cabin. At check-out, you can settle the account charges by credit card or travelers’ checks. Most cruise liners will not accept cash or personal checks.
What if I have motion sickness (seasick)?
Ships today are so well stabilized that most of the time you won’t notice you are even moving. It’s a good idea to take along some motion sickness precaution (motion sickness tablets, patches, or bracelet). If you do have a problem on-board, all ships have a doctor and a nurse that you’ll have access to. Consult your physician before taking any medication.
How do I tip on-board?
Most cruise lines now include tips on your on-board account. The amount ranges from $10.00 to $15.00 per person per day on most cruise lines. It can be higher on luxury cruise lines. While this makes tipping the proper people more convenient, you may alter these amounts according to your cruise experience in these areas. If you wish to change the amounts either by reducing or adding to your account, you should visit the purser’s desk on-board the cruise ship. Remember, your tips will affect these services on your cruise ship: Your Cabin Steward, Waiter and Assistant Waiter. Also note: most cruise lines add gratuities to bar tabs. Always check your bills before leaving the ship.
What do I need to pack for formal wear?
Not all cruises have “formal nights”. If they do, check out their recommended dress code. Tuxedos can be rented in some ships. There are formal dresses being sold on cruise ships as well. These are options available for your convenience to help reduce your luggage load.
Would it be better to take excursions on my own vs. excursions offer by the ship?
It’s a good idea to check out “shore excursion talk” once you’re on-board to see what the ship has to offer. If you decide to find excursions on your own, you will see plenty of taxis at most ports ready to take you on a tour similar to those offered on the ship at a reduced fare. It’s a safety precaution to book excursions with the ship when you are visiting less developed destinations or places that language might be a barrier.
